Leading in Children’s Ministry take more than me! It takes more people, skill, effort, time, energy than just a single leader. Pursuing new initiatives can create a synergy beyond what you (and even your team) can do alone.
So, how do you get started when new initiatives are needed?
Here are 6 steps to get started:
1. INVITE others
The best way to create buy-in for new ideas with new team members is to invite others to be part of a vision casting meeting. Invite a team of individuals that provide good input, are a good sounding board and are helpful to have on your side. Generally a team of 5-15 people is ideal for this purpose.
Set up a meeting to identify what you’ve done and start to think (dream) of what you’d like to do. Why do you want to meet? What are you hoping to accomplish? What challenge are you facing that you can’t seem to understand?
2. LISTEN to feedback & new ideas
If you set a meeting to ask how to improve a current program, chances are, you will get some ideas and feedback with which you don’t agree. Don’t use this time to change minds but to hear ideas. It goes a long way in building trust.
3. CREATE an action agenda
Don’t leave the meeting without having a plan in place. Do you need to meet again? Do you need to invite other people to be on the team? Does your team need to do research? Can you implement something? Pool your resources to discuss challenges or new ideas.
4. SHARE responsibilities
Make sure that all action responsibilities are not YOUR action responsibilities. If you truly listened, then probably some of the action items aren’t necessarily items that you would have chosen. But have faith, often the best team synergies work this way. And, if it doesn’t work out, you now have vested volunteers and team members that can advocate for success and failure and also speak of experiences in your ministry area.
5. COMMUNICATE results
So as to not create an exclusive environment and to have further buy-in, pull together the highlights, key ideas, action items, main concerns, etc. of the meeting and share with your fellow staff, lead pastor and any others who may be interested but couldn’t be at the meeting. Share for the purpose of transparency and building trust … but be mindful of not undermining the action steps being taking by your newly vested team members.
6. RESOURCE & SUPPORT your new (and original) team members
You may now (should now!) have new team members working on new action items in your ministry area. If you don’t and the team members are the same as you originally had and you’re still working on the same projects – start over with step one and invite additional/different individuals to brainstorm projects toward a God-sized goal.
Keep in touch with your all of your team members and resource them so they feel supported and not isolated. The power of your project started with the synergy of the group and the invitation to include God in leading the way. Work to support that synergy by meeting when relevant and working individually when most effective – and praying for and with your team through it all.
